What a Wi-Fi speed test actually measures

A Wi-Fi speed test measures your connection end to end: the internet plan your ISP delivers into your building, plus the wireless link from your router to whichever device you're testing on. The number you see is whichever half is slower at that moment. If your device is far from the router, has weak signal, or is sharing a crowded 2.4GHz band with the whole neighborhood, Wi-Fi becomes the bottleneck long before your actual internet plan does.

To isolate the two, run the test once over Wi-Fi and once over a wired Ethernet connection to the same device. A wired result close to your plan speed with a much lower Wi-Fi result points squarely at your wireless setup, not your ISP.

Getting an accurate Wi-Fi speed test

  • Stay within a room or two of the router, since every wall and floor between you and it reduces throughput.
  • Pause other devices' downloads, cloud backups, and video streams while you test; Wi-Fi bandwidth is shared across everything connected.
  • Turn off any VPN, since it adds encryption overhead and routes traffic through an extra hop before it reaches our servers.
  • Run the test two or three times and take the middle result; any single wireless reading has some natural variance.

2.4GHz vs 5GHz

5GHz supports significantly higher throughput and suffers less interference, but its range is shorter and it struggles to pass through walls. 2.4GHz reaches further through a house but tops out at lower speeds and is more congested, since it's shared by neighboring Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, and even some cordless phones and microwaves. If your device supports it, testing on 5GHz near the router gives the clearest picture of your connection's real ceiling.

Does a Wi-Fi speed test measure my router or my ISP plan?

Both, combined. The result is whichever is slower at that moment: your ISP connection into the building, or your Wi-Fi link from the router to your device. Running the same test over a wired Ethernet connection isolates the ISP side, so comparing the two tells you which one is actually the bottleneck.

Why is my Wi-Fi speed test result lower than my plan speed?

Wi-Fi rarely reaches the theoretical throughput of your plan. Distance from the router, walls, interference from neighboring networks, and how many devices are active all reduce real-world speed. A 500 Mbps plan commonly tests at a fraction of that over Wi-Fi from another room, which is normal, not a fault.

Should I test on 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi?

5GHz supports higher throughput at short range, so it's the better choice for a speed test if your device is near the router. 2.4GHz travels further through walls but tops out lower and is more prone to interference from other households, which makes it the more representative choice for far-from-router, real-world usage.

How can I get a more accurate Wi-Fi speed test?
