What is a public IP address?

It's the address your internet service provider assigns your connection to communicate on the public internet, distinct from the private IP addresses your router hands out to devices on your home network. Every device behind your router shares the same public IP when it reaches the outside world.

Why does my IP lookup show a different city than I'm in?

IP-based location is approximate. It's typically resolved to your ISP's regional routing hub or data center, not your exact address, so it can point to a nearby city rather than your precise location. This is normal and, if anything, a privacy benefit.

Is it safe to share my IP address?
