How does the Omniloop speed test work?

Omniloop measures your connection in three stages: first a series of small round-trips to calculate ping and jitter, then a multi-connection download burst to measure how fast data reaches your device, and finally a multi-connection upload burst to measure how fast your device can send data. Each stage discards an initial warm-up window so slow TCP ramp-up doesn't skew the result.

Why do my results differ from other speed tests?

Every speed test uses a different server, number of parallel connections, and test duration, so small differences are normal. Results can also vary between tests on the same tool depending on network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, VPNs, or other devices using bandwidth at the same time. For the most consistent reading, test over a wired connection with other devices idle.

What is ping and why does it matter?

Ping (or latency) is the time it takes for a small packet of data to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds. Lower is better, and it's especially important for video calls, competitive gaming, and anything else that needs a real-time, responsive connection.

What is jitter?

Jitter is the variation in ping over time. A connection with low, consistent latency (low jitter) feels smooth even under load, while high jitter causes stutter or lag spikes in real-time applications like calls and games, even if the average ping looks fine.

What counts as a good download and upload speed?

For HD video streaming and video calls, 25+ Mbps down is comfortable for most households. Households with multiple 4K streams, large file transfers, or several remote workers typically want 200+ Mbps. Upload speed matters most for video calls, cloud backups, and livestreaming, where 10+ Mbps up is a reasonable minimum for smooth calls.

Does Omniloop store my results?

Your test history is stored only in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to copy a shareable link or export an image, and we don't require an account or sign-up to run a test.

How does Omniloop pick which server to test against?

Omniloop matches your IP-geolocated coordinates against the nearest available server location automatically, the same real signal a manual picker would rely on anyway. The server shown next to the test button is recalculated fresh on every page load, so there's nothing to configure.
