What ping measures

Ping, also called latency, is the round-trip time for a small packet of data to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). It's an internet ping test in the most literal sense: send, wait, measure. Unlike download or upload speed, ping isn't about how much data moves, it's about how quickly your connection reacts, which is why it matters most for anything happening in real time.

Why server distance matters

Latency is bounded by physics: data can only travel so fast over fiber and copper, so a server on another continent will always show higher ping than one in your region, no matter how good your connection is. Omniloop automatically tests against the nearest available server to your IP-geolocated location, so the ping you see reflects your connection quality, not geography.

What is a good ping for gaming or video calls?

Under 40ms feels instant and is ideal for competitive gaming and calls. 40 to 100ms is generally fine for casual gaming, streaming, and browsing. Above 100ms, input lag and call delay become noticeable, and fast-paced games start to feel unresponsive.

Why does my ping test result change between tests?

Ping reflects real-time network conditions, so it naturally shifts with congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and how many devices are active. A single reading is a snapshot; running the test a few times at different moments gives a more honest picture than one number.

Does distance to the server affect my ping test?

Yes, significantly. Latency is bounded by the physical distance data has to travel, so testing against a server on another continent will always show higher ping than one nearby, regardless of your connection quality. That's why picking the nearest available server matters for an accurate reading.

Can I lower my ping?

A wired Ethernet connection typically shaves several milliseconds off Wi-Fi, and closing bandwidth-heavy background apps (large downloads, cloud sync, other streams) reduces contention that inflates ping under load. Beyond that, ping is mostly set by your ISP's routing and physical distance to the server.
